Allenbuild Midlands

Steel intensive underground car park constructed for the East Midlands Examination Board in Birmingham.

The steel sheet piles were designed to support both temporary and permanent soils loads and also to carry vertical axial loads from the three storey steel framed building above. The sheet piled structure was made watertight to meet the requirements of BS 8102:1990 grade 2 as defined by CIRIA report 140 using our SPUK Lockblock Hydrostop System.

The piles were designed for a service life of 75 years which was accomplished using sacrificial steel thickness.

The site was enclosed on three sides by existing occupied offices and noise/vibration levels had to be controlled to an exceptionally low level.

The sheet piles were installed to the underlying sandstone strata at approx 8 metres below commencing installation level using our U.P. 150 Silent Vibration Free Pile Press equipment. Two piles in each side of the basement were then dynamically load tested to ensure that the appropriate load capacities had been achieved. The exposed pile faces were wire brushed and painted with a conventional oil based paint system as part of the main contract works.
