Irish Eyes Smile on UK Specialist
Lancashire based piling experts Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd have recently completed several basement contracts in Ireland including permanent, temporary and temporary sacrificial works...
LAPPS QUAY - CORK
The specialist subcontract works at Lapps Quay Cork involves the design, supply and installation of sheet piles to form a two storey Steel Intensive Underground Basement Car Park as part of a major Hotel, Commercial, Retail and Residential development being undertaken by P.J. Hegarty and Sons in the City of Cork. Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd have worked in close liaison with P.J. Hegarty and Walsh Goodfellow Consulting Engineers to develop the innovative design for the Permanent Sheet Piled Basement walls. Extensive temporary works were required to facilitate removal of the existing Quay Wall, which is being reconstructed to form an integral part of the two storey deep car park.

17.0m long sheet piles were installed to form a gravel filled temporary double skin gravity cofferdam over a 100 L.M. plan length of the River Lee. Three sides of the basement perimeter (some 235 linear meterage), are being constructed using 17.0m Arbed PU25 steel sheet piles. In order to keep within low noise and vibration limits set for the works, the sheet piles were installed using a Bauer RTG 18m Telescopic Leader Rig fitted with a variable moment high frequency vibratory hammer.
The sheet piles are temporarily braced at one level using either fabricated steel bracing designed and installed by Sheet Piling UK Ltd, or temporary ground anchors installed by HMC Construction Co a specialist company owned by P.J. Hegarty. When the basement had been excavated to formation level, some 7.0m depth below commencing ground level, the sheet pile interlocks and the sheet pile/basement slab joint were sealed using the SPUK Lockblock Hydrostop system to provide a fully watertight structure in compliance with BS8102:1990 Grade 2 as defined by Ciria Report 140.(Steel Intensive Basement table II). In the permanent state, the sheet pile walls are designed to resist the earth and water pressure when supported at basement and intermediate floor slab levels. The piles have also been assessed for their vertical load carrying capacity, which has been accounted for in the basement structure/foundation design.
