"Hats" The Way To Do It!
Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd have recently completed the 'Design, Supply and Installation' of Steel Sheet Piles to form a Large Permanent Basement in Rugby for Principal Contractor R.G. Group Ltd on behalf of their Client Asda Stores Ltd.
The works included installation of approximately 410 linear metres of sheet piles up to 9.0m long, including the supply and installation of the widest hot rolled sheet piles in the world; the 25H 'Hat Pile', supplied exclusively to SPUK by Nippon Steel Corporation, Japan's largest steel manufacturer.
Installed for the first time in the UK, the 900mm wide 'Hat Pile' offers economy due to its comparatively high modulus (1610cm3/m) to weight (126kg/m2) ratio as well as quicker installation rates due to the width of each pile.
The piles were installed using a Bauer RTG RG16m Telescopic Leader Rig fitted with a variable moment High Frequency Vibro Hammer and were back-driven to final level using a Hydraulic Impact Hammer.
Once installed, the piles were dynamically tested and a CAPWAP Analysis was undertaken to verify their vertical load carrying capacity in order to directly support the superstructure loading of the building.
When welding the pile interlocks to form the fully 100% watertight Grade 2 basement structure in compliance with BS8102:1990, the 'Hat Piles' once again proved their worth. With fewer clutches to weld, due to the wider section, there was a 30% reduction in the welding required resulting in a substantial cost and programming savings.
Furthermore, whilst not a specific problem on this site, the wider section also reduces the permeability of the sheet pile wall prior to completion of the sealing welds, hence requiring fewer measures to deal with a high water table (de-watering pumps etc) and subsequently water ingress. For permanent leachate or water cut-off barriers this also generates significant cost savings for interlock sealants.
In summary, the 'Hat Pile' offers a cost effective piling solution throughout Design, Installation and Sealing.
The 'Hat Piles' can also be installed using a Silent VibrationFree Pile Press and are suitable for both temporary and permanent works.
