Braidburn Flood Prevention Scheme
Sheet Piling (UK) are currently working on the supply and installation of Steel Sheet Piles to form floor defence wall along both banks of a 100L.M. length of the Braidburn Edinburgh.
The length of burn to be piles passes through a residential area, which has been vulnerable to flooding on a number of occasions in the past.
The project involves the installation of 6.0m long PU18 sheet piles, through mixed sands, gravels and clay. As the works are through a residential estate, and in close proximity to domestic dwellings, both noise and vibration levels needed to be controlled to within acceptable limits.
Prior to installation, Sheet Piling UK Ltd undertook a vibration assessment and prepared proposals to install the piles using a combination of vibratory and vibrationfree installation methods.
This indicated that piles no closer than approximately 6.0m to the properties, from the proposed pile line could be safely installed using an ABI Telescopic Leader Rig with a 60 tonne dynamic force vibro hammer, and the piles within 6.0m should be installed using a Silent VibrationFree Pile Press.
Work on site commenced at the furthest point from the dwellings, using the vibratory system with vibration monitoring being carried out at various distances from the source to validate the theoretic vibration levels derived from the initial assessment.
The vibration monitoring results confirmed the assessment, and the Silent VibrationFree Press equipment was mobilised to site and continued to install piles in the areas close to the dwellings.
The Principle Contractor for the scheme is Carillion. The Leading Consulting Engineers is Faber Maunsell. The Client is Edinburgh City Council.
