The Eagle Centre - Derby

Building on our proven expertise in steel intensive basement construction SPUK's involvement was fundamental in getting Westfiled Shoppingtowns Ltd 310m retail development in Derby city center off to a flying start. With approximately 1300 linear meters of pile wall required to retain both temporary and permanent soil loads, three silent piling rigs and two ground anchor rigs worked simultaneously to complete elevations to suit the principal contractors ever changing excavation programme.

In order to provide a fully watertight basement SPUK's utilised its experience gained in developing the Lockblock Hydrostop system. This involved the specialist installation of proprietary tanking membranes and products and the welding of approximately 8 kilometers of sheet pile interlock!!; still the only way to guarantee the pile interlocks remain watertight for the design life of 60 years.

In areas where conventional cantilever design was insufficient the sheet pile wall was supported in the temporary condition by multi-strand ground anchors installed over the top of the pile wall prior to the formation of a reinforced concrete capping beam. When the capping beam was cured the anchors were tested and stressed allowing bulk excavation of the basement area. In the permanent condition the ground floor slab supports the capping beam and the ground anchors are de-stressed. This system proved to be a cost effective solution by avoiding the need for temporary wailer and the problems associated with its removal from under the ground floor slab.
