Pond Takes Flight

In May 2007 Sheet Piling (UK) Limited were approached by Tier Consult to review a scheme for a ground attenuation pond for the A350 expansion programme at Airbus Broughton.
Sheet Piling (UK) Limited offered a solution using vinyl piles produced by Crane Materials International in Georgia USA. The piles required to be 6m long but had 2m projecting above ground level. The soil profile was generally silt & clay overlaying medium dense alluvial sand.
In October 2007 Sheet Piling (UK) Limited were awarded the Contract to provide vinyl sheet piling to the attenuation pond complete with a preformed capping beam. The section used is a CMI CL9900.
Installation work commenced in December 2007 using conventional piling methods of trestles and beams. The beams were lined with timber to prevent damage to the piles during installation.
The piles were installed using a 35 tonne crawler crane and 7RF vibratory hammer.
The interlocks to the piles were filled with Fusroc SWX swellable waterbar prior to installation.
Piles were driven to level or refusal with the 7RF vibratory hammer and then backdriven to final refusal using an impacting plate on the head of the pile to convert the energy in the vibratory hammer to an impacting action.
After completion of the installation of the piles a preformed capping section was fixed to the top of the piles.
