Burton-On-Trent Flood Alleviation Scheme

Sheet Piling (UK) have recently completed the installation of approximately 110L.m of steel sheet piles within the grounds of The Abbey Inn, Burton-On-Trent. The works were carried out as part of the Flood Alleviation Improvement Scheme being developed by the Environment Agency in the town.
The scheme required steel sheet piles to be installed in close proximity to The Abbey Inn, a former monastic infirmary associated with Burton Abbey Church and dating back to the 14th Century. The Abbey is of significant national archaeological interest and is protected as a 'Scheduled Ancient Monument'.
In addition to the problems posed installing sheet piles adjacent to The Abbey, the works were to be carried out next to an arm of the River Trent and through difficult piling ground consisting of 'Dense River Terrace Sands & Gravels' overlying 'Mercia Mudstone'.

Sheet Piling (UK) were approached at an early stage by the Principal Contractor (Volker Stevin) to devise an installation method which not only addressed environmental restrictions primarily on vibration due to the proximity of The Abbey and noise due to a nearby college but also restrictions on works adjacent to the River Trent whilst overcoming the problematical ground conditions.
Working in close collaboration with Volker Stevin, the Environment Agency and owners of The Abbey to overcome the significant technical challenges presented by the scheme; Sheet Piling (UK) proposed a solution involving preaugering the pile line to effectively loosen the ground, prior to installation using a Silent Vibrationless Pile Press.
Since Water Jetting was not permitted adjacent to the River Trent the piles had to be installed 'dry', thus presenting a further restriction on sheet pile installation. Consequently Sheet Piling (UK) also advised on a suitable sheet pile section for driveability and use of a clutch sealant to reduce interlock friction.

The photographs show the successful installation of PU25 / PU32 sheet piles to form the new flood defence wall using the Silent Vibrationless Pile Press. The works were completed ahead of schedule and to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
The Principal Contractor for the scheme is Volker Stevin. The Leading Consulting Engineer is Jacobs Babtie. The Client is the Environment Agency.
