CUSTOM HOUSE QUAY - WEXFORD
Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd are the nominated Specialist Sheet Piling Contractors for the extensive temporary cofferdam works being installed to facilitate excavation for a large underground basement car park as part of the prestigious mixed Commercial, Retail and Residential development currently being constructed by P.J. Walls Ltd in the City of Wexford. The basement footprint extends over virtually the entire available area of the site, and is bounded on all sides by existing buildings or roads.
Due to the soils conditions (soft silty clay with bands of peat), depth of excavation required and the necessity to control pile deflections to within specified limits, it was necessary to design the sheet piling works as a fully propped cofferdam. 511no 13.0m & 13.5m long LX25 & PU25 sheet pile sections were installed to form the 340 L.M. perimeter of the cofferdam. Extensive horizontal, fabricated steel bracing comprising 610 x 305 U.B. walers with 610 dia tubular props up to 28.0m in length were installed to enable P.J. Walls and Co to excavate full depth of up to 4.5m over the plan area of the basement and construct the entire basement floor slab without obstruction from raking props.
The sheet piles are designed to cantilever above the basement floor slab to allow bracing removal. This will afford clear, uninterrupted access for subsequent basement wall construction works. The sheet piles were installed by high frequency variable moment Leader Rig mounted vibro hammer. Because of the limited access for extraction work, over substantial areas of the site, a Giken UP150 Silent Vibration Free pile press will be used to hydraulically remove the piles from areas inaccessible for conventional pile extraction equipment.
