Supporting Best Practice in Sheet Piling

Sheet Piling (UK) Limited has just renewed its sponsorship of the Steel Piling Group, a best practice focused sheet pile industry body for UK-based individuals and companies in the sheet piling sector, whether manufacturing, supplying, designing or installing sheet steel piles.

The Steel Piling Group (SPG) was formed by British Steel in 1995 with the group’s aim being that of promoting steel piling and knowledge throughout the sector and beyond. In 2004, British Steel (by then known as Corus) sold the sheet piling division to ArcelorMittal, so a new host was required. The SPG re-launched in 2006 as an independent group sponsored by several members and with secretarial services provided by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). In 2017, the Steel Piling Group underwent an organisational review and was re-aligned with the Steel Construction Institute (SCI), which now provides the secretariat services.

Sheet Piling (UK) Limited is delighted to be part of a group that disseminates knowledge, often with regard to new challenges such as climate change, sustainability and carbon reduction. Additionally, the Steel Piling Group promotes best practice amongst those positioned at every level within the sheet piling supply chain.

Operating to best practice standards is hugely important to us as a business. Best practice procedures uphold quality standards that are alternatives to mandatory legislative practices and often based on self-assessment and benchmarking against others. These standards can also feature within well-known industry standards such as ISO 9000 and ISO 14001.

Best practice is hugely important in steel sheet piling project management, enabling designers and installers of sheet piles to avoid reinventing the wheel. It is a means to retain control and achieve things without mistakes, working as efficiently as possible. In this sense, it is the cornerstone of business success in many different industry sectors.

To reinforce why we support a body that upholds best practice in sheet piling, we have come up with 8 key reasons why best practice should be embraced.

  1. It can lead to an increase in sales, or entry into new markets
  2. It enables an organisation to embrace technology more efficiently
  3. It improves the quality of work, processes and/or materials used
  4. It allows for the lessons from previous trials or mistakes to be learned and applied
  5. It assists the development of workers’ skills and knowledge
  6. It helps reduce costs and waste
  7. It underpins enhanced competitiveness
  8. It enables innovation to be fostered and introduced

We can clearly see all of these benefits emanating from membership of the Steel Piling Group, whose work is disseminating such benefits throughout the sheet piling sector. This is the reason we are proud to be one of the Group’s sponsors and keenest advocates.
