Restricted Access Sheet Piling on M62 Motorway

Sheet Piling UK Ltd have recently completed the installation of ‘Free Issue’ Arcelor Mittal sheet piles on the M62 Junction 30-32 HATMS Scheme for BAM Nuttall/Morgan Sindall JV (BMJV).

The works involved installation of a King Sheet Pile (KSP) wall at 5no discrete locations to facilitate localised widening of the earthworks embankment to form new Gantry foundations.

By using a CAT 382D LCR Excavator Piling Rig with a Movax SG-60 Vibratory Side Grip Hammer, Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd were able to carry out the works during normal working hours within a hard shoulder traffic management closure only.

The CAT 328D LCR Excavator has been designed to rotate with a minimum amount of counterweight hanging over the tracks which allows it to work in tight confined spaces.

As such, this new generation of Compact Radius (CR) machines are ideal for restricted access infrastructure works or works within space restricted areas.

The works were undertaken within a 3.6m wide ‘Work Zone’ and a 0.6m wide ‘Safety Zone’ to the Varioguard Barrier which was all located in the existing hard shoulder.

With this in mind, all installation works were undertaken within normal daytime working hours without the need for any additional traffic management Lane 1 closures or nightshift possession working.

The Compact Radius Excavator Piling Rig had the following advantages to the Principal Contractor on this project:

• No additional Lane 1 traffic management required.
• All works carried out in hard shoulder closure.

• No nightshift possession working required.
• All works carried out during daytime working hours.

In Summary, Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd were able to offer significant Health & Safety, Programme and Cost Savings to the project by utilising a unique Compact Radius (CR) Excavator Piling Rig.
