Sheet Piling UK Wins London-based HS2 Contract

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd has recently been awarded a contract to handle sheet pile installation works as part of the HS2 high-speed rail project.

Sheet Piling UK won a tender issued by the SCS (Skanska, Costain) and STRAVAG joint venture (SCS JV), to carry out sheet piling works as part of the civil contracts, lots S1 and S2, of the HS2 project, which is fundamental to the UK’s low-carbon future. Sheet Piling UK is working on the Eastern section of this lots package, on sheet pile installation projects that will span the next three to four years.

S1 includes 9km of twin-bored tunnels between the new HS2 stations of Euston and Old Oak Common. S2 continues from Old Oak Common, through 15km of twin-bored tunnels, to West Ruislip. A further 5km of open route is then in the plan, before the C1 lot of works is reached.

Sheet Piling UK will be working to install the sheet pile infrastructure required around structures including Hampstead Road Bridge, Euston Scissor Box and the Granby Road Terrace Bridge. It will also carry out crucial mitigation works for the PVE retaining walls around the Euston Scissor Box, working on the complex groundworks involved in creating the wall structure required by the HS2 project.

Given the urban nature of the project and the high-density population around the sites, Sheet Piling UK will utilise Silent Vibrationless Pile Pressing methods, to deliver the most sensitive approach to sheet piling, bearing in mind the needs and concerns of local residents. This method will also be the most suitable for the ground conditions, based on these consisting of predominantly of London Clay for which the Pile Pressing method is ideally suited.

Some of the sheet pile installation will be undertaken through possession working, where the team of contractors and sub-contractors will take the site over from Network Rail. Personal Track Safety-trained (PTS) operatives and employees with Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS) accreditation, will be deployed, to ensure safe operations at all times.

Throughout this project, Sheet Piling UK will use highest-quality steel sheet piles from its own extensive stock, thus delivering environmental benefits and helping to meet the environmental KPIs of the HS2 project.

Sheet Piling UK’s managing director, Andrew Cotton, says:

“Sheet Piling UK is proud to play its part in a state-of-the-art project aimed at delivering greater economic benefits to the North and Midlands and levelling up the country, whilst also offering enhanced sustainable travel options in the years ahead.”

“This project will create new job opportunities within our organisation and help us to continue the business growth we have enjoyed for many years, cementing our position as the UK’s leading specialist sheet pile company still further.”
