Harrowside Long Sea Outfall Pipe Nominated for Top Award

The annual Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North West Civil Engineering Awards have been announced and a project spearheaded by Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd has been nominated for a top award.

Presented by ICE President Tim Broyd, the ICE North West Civil Engineering Awards showcase the collective and individual achievements of a variety of civil engineers and civil engineering project types undertaken in the region. The awards recognise excellence and imaginative concepts in civil engineering practice across the north west. There are award categories for Small, Medium, Large and Community projects spanning all sizes and structures and celebrate projects that have a clear benefit to society.

The £17.7m Harrowside Long Sea Outfall Pipe, Blackpool has been nominated in the Large Project Award category. The project was commissioned by United Utilities and was undertaken by United Utilities Engineering, Land & Marine Engineering Ltd (Part of the Murphy Group).

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd were contracted by Land & Marine Engineering Ltd to design, supply, install and subsequently extract over 1800 tonnes of steel sheet piles to form a temporary pipe trench and a safe haven. The work was conducted between high and low tide, eventually reaching a length of some 400m. The temporary sheet pile pipe trench and temporary sheet pile cofferdam were constructed to facilitate the installation of a new 2.1m diameter Outfall Pipe from the Lennex Gate and Harrowside Pumping Stations in Blackpool. The project is part of United Utilities £125m investment to improve the sewer network along the Fylde Coast over the next 5 years.

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd managing director Andrew Cotton said “This was a challenging project to work on, which required precise planning and scheduling. As the chosen sheet piling contractors, our sheet piling teams worked both seven days a week and on split shifts, day and night, to maximise working time in between tides. We’re delighted that this prestigious project has been nominated for a top award. It’s great for all involved to be recognised for their efforts.”

ICE North West Regional Chair, John Gatheral said, “We had a truly fantastic response this year with nominations covering a wide range of civil engineering projects, which are already delivering a range of benefits to the region.

The winners will be revealed live on the night at our gala North West Civil Engineering Awards dinner, on Friday 10 March 2017 at the Hilton Hotel, Blackpool.

Darrell Matthews, North West regional director of the Institution of Civil Engineers, said : “We’re delighted to bring the North West Civil Engineering Awards to Blackpool. He continued “This year’s nominations from Blackpool reflect the vital contribution that civil engineering makes to Britain’s favourite seaside resort – schemes that improve bathing water quality, and a bridge that’s vital to tourist traffic.”
