Sheet Piling Design Services

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd is a sheet piling specialist offering a comprehensive subcontractor design service for all aspects of both temporary and permanent steel piling schemes.

The team works to both UK and Eurocode design standards, as well as to ISO 9001 quality procedures, when supplying this sheet piling design service. This service is managed by experienced and professional engineers, with the appropriate CSCS Accreditations and over 30 years’ specialist design experience within the sheet piling sector.

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd is a member of the Steel Piling Group – a national industry body formed to promote the use of steel piles in construction. The company also has representation on the Eurocode EC3 Part 5 UK Mirror Group Committee, currently reviewing and promoting beneficial revisions to the Steel Piling Design Standard, EC3-Part 5.

Our Sheet Piling Design Service

Sheet Piling UK’s design service can initially advise a client on the feasibility of carrying out a sheet piling scheme. Where steel piles may not be suitable for use, it will propose alternatives in the form of other methods of temporary or permanent earth retention. With some projects, it may include proposals for an extended use of steel piles, to assist project delivery. Examples of this include bearing piles, cut-off walls and marine structures.

Great consideration should be given to the use of steel piles within a project, as significant cost and programme benefits can be gained. For this reason, SPUK welcomes early involvement with clients, principal contractors or principal designers as, the earlier the contact, the greater the opportunity to deliver benefits.

Sheet Piling for Temporary and Permanent Works

Steel sheet piling was traditionally used, in the main, for temporary works, but has increasingly become a component of permanent works. Our design team is highly experienced in both types of project and offers specialist advice and insight, no matter how challenging the project.

Temporary Works

Here, all of our design work is governed by a temporary works procedures document, which outlines how a project will be controlled, from inception to completion and handover. This covers:

  • acceptance of the sheet piling brief
  • design checking and certification
  • handover of design information
  • the temporary works register
  • site control and implementation of sheet piling works
  • design changes, if required
  • final handover of works to the principal contractor or client (with as-built records, O&M manuals and other documentation

All is handled in accordance with BW5975 – the Code of Practice for Temporary Works Procedures – and the CDM (2015) Regulations.

Permanent Works

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd has been at the forefront of the trend to use steel sheet piles in permanent works, particularly with regard to steel-intensive underground basement structures. The company’s reputation for innovation, and its expertise in handling such sheet piling briefs, has enabled it to be involved with the design and installation of some of the largest and most technically challenging sheet pile basement structure projects in the UK and Ireland.

Highway Works

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd is also available for assistance and input into the relevant sections of Approval in Principle Forms for highway works. Such documentation would be that found in the:

  • Design Manual for Roads and Bridges
  • Network Rail’s Forms F001 (Approval in Principle), FOO2 (Statement of Design Intent) & F003 (Design/Design Check Certificates).
