The main purpose of a cofferdam is to exclude soil and/or water to form a safely supported excavation where construction works can progress. Generally speaking, cofferdams are constructed where significant excavation depths are required in otherwise poor or restricted working environments.
Cofferdams are formed using steel sheet piles acting either in cantilever or being supported by internal steelwork bracing frames or external anchorages. The exact design solution will be dependent on a number of factors including depth of excavation, external design forces, construction methodology and installation methodology.
Other than the benefits noted above, sheet pile cofferdams are extremely sustainable and environmentally beneficial forms of temporary works structures, as upon completion of the permanent structure, the temporary cofferdam can be fully extracted and re-used on another temporary works project.

Cofferdams are primarily used for the construction of bridge foundations, underground storage tanks, drive and reception pits, land outfall structures, utility diversion schemes, and generally any deep excavation on land, or over water, where safe access to undertake construction works is required.
