United Against Dementia – Alzheimer’s Society

Come rain or shine, Saturday 10th June 2023 will see hundreds of fund raisers gather in the Lake District, and seven other locations around the UK, to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. Amongst those tackling the gruelling marathon distance trek is our very own Nicola Murray.

Nic is joining forces with thousands of others who are ‘United Against Dementia’, helping to raise funds to bring help and hope to everyone affected by dementia. Although the terrain will be challenging, Nic will be able to experience the beauty of Ullswater lake, surrounded by towering fells and the powerful Aira Force waterfall.

There are TREK26 events taking place throughout the UK, with over 8,000 walkers taking part, covering a combined 126,000 miles:

  • London
  • Stonehenge
  • Peak District
  • Brecon Beacons
  • Cotswolds
  • Lake District
  • North York Moors
  • South Devon Coast

Nic is walking in memory of a family member, who passed away in October 2022, who was suffering with early onset dementia, complicated by Parkinson disease, which both affect the mind.

The Alzheimer’s Society is an amazing organisation who not only help the person with Dementia, but also help their family find ways of dealing with the stress, upset and anxiety this condition brings with it. Nic explains that:

“With Alzheimer’s becoming more prevalent as we live longer, we all know someone who has been affected or living with Alzheimer’s. Therefore I decided to sign up for the TREK26 challenge, which is a 26.1mile trek up and around Ullswater on 10 June 2023.”

“The Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, they will help to create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community, without fear or prejudice.”

The tough 26 mile route treks around the tranquil Ullswater lake, nestled amongst rolling hills of the English Lake District. Walkers are taken through woodland, fields and farmland, with stunning views over Helvellyn, which is England’s third highest mountain.
